Where to Eat in Flagstaff: The Local Dining Map

From chilaquiles at MartAnne's to wood-fired pizza at Pizzicletta and date night at Atria: the sourced local's map of where to eat in Flagstaff, block by block.

Glowing restaurant storefronts and string lights along Historic Route 66 in downtown Flagstaff at dusk

Flagstaff's dining scene is one of the best arguments for moving here, and it is bigger than a town of about 77,000 people has any right to. The heart of it is downtown along Historic Route 66, where the Mother Road runs straight through the middle of town and the blocks around it hold the restaurants, coffeehouses, and breweries that define the place. This is the local's map: where the day starts, where the pizza is, where the long-running kitchens hide, and where to go when the occasion calls for more than a counter seat.

Why Flagstaff's food scene is bigger than the town

Three things built it. Route 66 runs straight through Flagstaff, and downtown along the Mother Road is lined with restaurants, breweries, and shops, a dining history the city itself documents. The high-elevation setting, 7,000 feet in the largest ponderosa pine forest in the world, fuels a strong independent culture and a serious craft-brewing scene. And the Southwestern and New Mexican food traditions are the local backbone, chilaquiles and green chile as much a part of the town as the snow.

Breakfast and brunch: where the day starts

Breakfast is a serious meal in Flagstaff, and the local institution is MartAnne's Burrito Palace, which bills itself as the house that chilaquiles built. It is the answer to the most common breakfast question in town. Around it, The Toasted Owl Cafe, Tourist Home Flagstaff Cafe, and Mike & Ronda's The Place round out the morning rotation, each with its own regulars.

Coffee and bakeries: the town's living rooms

Macy's European Coffeehouse & Bakery has been Flagstaff's de facto living room for nearly four decades, a house-roasted coffeehouse on South Beaver Street where half the town has had a first date or a job interview. Firecreek Coffee Company and Matador Coffee Roasting Company cover the serious coffee crowd, Mozelle's Downtown Bakery does the pastry case, and Brandy's Proper Cafe, the downtown arm of the restaurant that is moving into Proper Meats + Provisions, is worth watching.

Pizza: wood-fired and classic

Pizzicletta is the pizza locals send out-of-towners to, a wood-fired pizzeria on West Phoenix Avenue that shares a building with Dark Sky Brewing, so the beer and the pie arrive together. Fratelli Pizza has downtown and north-side locations for the classic New York-style slice, NiMarco's runs three shops across town on the budget end, and Lumberjack Pizza on Route 66 has been feeding the neighborhood for years.

Mexican and Southwestern: the local backbone

Beyond MartAnne's, the Mexican and Southwestern scene runs deep. El Tapatio's original Route 66 dining room is a town staple, and its second Flagstaff location opened in the Fort Valley Shopping Center in July 2025. La Fonda on North 2nd Street and Agave on Route 66 are the other long-running sit-down favorites, and Salsa Brava on the east side has a bar crowd of its own.

Thai and sushi: the long-running kitchens

Flagstaff keeps a genuinely strong Thai scene downtown. Dara Thai has been on South San Francisco Street since 1992, which makes it one of the oldest kitchens in town. Pato Thai on Route 66 and Swaddee Thai Cuisine on Aspen Avenue both have loyal followings, and Karma Sushi Bar Grill covers the sushi side on Historic Route 66.

Date night and farm-to-table

When the occasion calls for a reservation, downtown delivers. Atria, led by Chef Rochelle Daniel, is the town's high-end flagship, and Tinderbox Kitchen has been the other anchor of the serious-dining set for years. Shift Kitchen & Bar, Forêt, and Josephine's, the latter in a historic home on North Humphreys Street, round out the date-night row, with The McMillan and Fat Olives as the neighborhood standbys.

Burgers and comfort food

For the casual end, Diablo Burger on North Leroux Street is the downtown burger standard, Bun Huggers on Milton Road is the classic drive-up, Brown Bag Burger + Bar on West Route 66 does the elevated fast-casual thing, and The Northern Pines on East Butler Avenue is the family restaurant that has fed the east side for decades.

Beer, cider, and mead

The food map connects directly to the beer map. Beaver Street Brewery, Lumberyard Brewing Co., and Mother Road Brewing Company all serve full kitchens alongside their taps, so a brewery crawl can double as a dinner tour. The full circuit, including the Route 66 meadery and where the cider pours, has its own guide.

Sweet finishes

Dessert in Flagstaff runs from Timberline Ice Cream on the east side to the pastry case at Mozelle's downtown, and the town's bakeries and coffeehouses cover the rest. If you are moving with kids, the ice cream stops are part of the neighborhood research.

What the food map tells you about moving here

A dining scene this size is a signal: it means a stable year-round population, a downtown that actually gets used, and a town that supports independent businesses. It is also one of the easiest ways to meet people in your first month, and one of the best ways to test a neighborhood, since the restaurants and taprooms near a home often tell you what the block is really like. Food out in Flagstaff prices in line with the rest of Arizona, a point the cost-of-living guide makes in detail.

Sources and where to go from here

This map is built from the businesses themselves and from the local tourism and dining guides that track the scene: Discover Flagstaff's Route 66 page, Visit Arizona's local dining features, and the Historic 66 Arizona dining itinerary. Restaurant hours and menus change, so check a spot's own site before you plan around it.
